Mature Beauty
The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The work that signaled Fitzgerald's maturity as a storyteller and novelist, "The Beautiful and Damned" is a devastating portrait of the excesses of the Jazz Age. Anthony Comstock Patch is a Harvard-educated gallant who leisurely aspires to author a book as he awaits an enormous inheritance upon his grandfather's death. Not quite gorgeous, but considered handsome here and there, he thinks himself an exceptional young man -- sophisticated, well-adjusted, and destined to achieve some subtle accomplishment deemed worthy by the elect. Gloria is a sparkling young socialite and a rare beauty. Armed with an incisive wit, she's at once level and reckless. Patch's impassioned marriage to Gloria is fueled by alcohol and consumed by greed. The dazzling couple race through a series of alcohol-induced fiascoes -- first in hilarity, and later in despair. "The Beautiful and Damned" is a piercing and tragic depiction of New York nightlife, reckless ambition, squandered talent, and the faux aristocracy of the nouveaux riches. Published in 1922 on the heels of Fitzgerald's first novel, "This Side of Paradise," it gives evidence to the sharp social insight and breathtaking lyricism of one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century.
Jane Austen's 2-Pack: Persuasion / Pride And Prejudice "Jane Austen's 2-Pack" contains "Persuasion" and "Pride And Prejudice" "Persuasion" - This beautifully remastered dramatization of "Persuasion" conveys all the passion and frustrations of Jane Austen's most mature heroine. When Anne Elliot turned down Captain Wentworth's proposal of marriage, she allowed herself to be "persuaded" by her snobbish family's conviction of his unworthiness. But now, after separation of 8 years, Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth are to meet again and the tables have turned. Her former lover's fortunes have prospered and he is now returned from a career at sea both eligible and affluent. Anne's father, Sir Walter Elliot of Kellynch Hall, has been forced to lease their home and move the family into a rather smaller abode in Bath. Just as Anne now recognizes the false values, that persuaded her to reject Captain Wentworth, so she must also accept that his heart now seems set upon the youth and beauty of the impetuous Louisa Musgrove. "Pride And Prejudice" - Shot on location in the beautiful English countryside, this flurry of romantic courtships full of injured pride and unfounded prejudice springs vividly to life in this remastered production of Jane Austen's most famous novel "Pride And Prejudice." The story of the lively, precocious and very eligible Bennet girls captures all the nuances of 18th century life among the English gentry, a society obsessed with profitable marriage contracts. When the wealthy and aloof Mr. Darcy insults Elizabeth Bennet at a dance, the tension and romance of their relationship is sparked, while the family beauty Jane attracts the attention of a gentleman presumed to be above her station. Her flirtatious younger sister Lydia lands herself in a steamy scandal that could ruin the reputation and "chances" of all the Bennet sisters. Package type is back-to-back.
